ServicePals.com launches chatroom and IM

chat

As we have promised we are implementing an IM and chat facility into ServicePals.com. Chat has been one of the most requested services on ServicePals.com since its relaunch, so we have now added both chat and IM. We hope to improve site “stickiness” and repeat visits but ultimately compound the already successful user experience .
Users will be able to use the chatroom to communicate with other members who are not necessarily added pals. Who knows, friendships may be created and ultimately connections made from pals of pals. We hope the service will go down a storm and it will be monitored closely for usage so that we can assess its value which will lead to further development. The chat itself includes an audio video option too, enabling users not only to text chat but video chat as well, a great way to get in touch with old pals who you haven’t seen since the “good old days”. We hope you enjoy the chatroom facility and IM , our main mission is to connect servicepeople and we think chat and IM will enhance our aim.

ServicePals.com embraces Troops Live Aid 2009

January 8th, 2009

live aid

ServicePals.com has come to the assistance of Troops Live Aid 2009. TLA have been in talks with other organisers to stage a live aid event at Wembley Stadium to show our support to the Armed Forces.

The story so far…

Following the vision of two service personnel Tony Duffy and Mal Franks started a long winding battle to organise a Support Our British Troops live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium called,
“Troops Live Aid 2009”

Starting with a boldly passionate Facebook group: ‘SUPPORT OUR TROOPS LIVE AID EVENT @ 02 ARENA LONDON 2009’ (The O2 Arena being the original plan before realising how big this event could potentially be!), Tony Duffy was immediately in contact with Mal Franks. The pair are currently still serving in the armed forces. Between them they have served collectively in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan which enabled them to share this incredible vision.

The pair talked for days whilst the word started to spread between their friends, relatives and colleagues. Tony Duffy explained: ‘We had to get the ball rolling and Facebook was the first thing that came to my mind for sending our message to everyone.

Tony and Mal having served collectively know how hard our British Troops work. The conditions and seeing things that go well beyond the human eye were are only testament to this.

We are working hard to have the concert ready for the 20th June 2009. We have a team working with us talking to Media, Radio and Performing Acts to show thier support and have it live on TV, showing to troops in Iraq, Germany, Cyprus and most of all Afghanistan. We did talk on having this concert at the 02 in London but changed to Wembley Stadium due to popular demand on tickets and support on our Facebook group.

Since the Facebook group started, several key members have been appointed specific job roles thus creating a foundation team of 20 people that share the same vision. All of which are working tirelessly day and night to ensure the event is a huge success.

We love our British Troops and need to show them support, they are doing an amazing job; in risking ‘their’ lives to help keep ‘our’ lives safe.

We have a long way to go but we will not give up in anyway!, all the staff at Troops Live Aid 2009 will make this happen.

ServicePals.com has set up an online community and will actively promote the event and assist the team with its web presence and list of influential contacts. It is also the only Military Social Network involved in the project.

ServicePals.com raises Afghan Awareness

December 16th, 2008

my Daddy is a soldier

ServicePals.com is now promoting the sale of the book called My Daddy Is A Soldier, a new book that helps a small child come to terms with constant operational tours.

“The children of our soldiers are missing their fathers more than ever as they serve Britain on more frequent tours across the world. My Daddy Is A Soldier aims to support young children and families dealing with soldiers’ deployment overseas.

The Afghan Appeal Fund (AAF) launches a picture book aimed at the youngest members of the Army community whose small lives are invariably turned upside down when Daddy disappears on duty. Very few books exist which focus on a soldier’s absence within the family. This unique storybook explains, in simple text and photographs, that Daddy will be ‘going far away to work’ but will, most importantly, return.

Speaking at the launch of the book, President of the Afghan Appeal Fund, Lady Caroline Richards, said:

“I love this book. Anything that helps a small child understand and come to terms with deployment and the absence of a parent is invaluable. Indispensable….why hasn’t this been written before?”

ServicePals.com Product Director Gus Goodall an ex REME WO2 said ” If you know anyone with young children who has a parent in the Military then this book is a must. I wish my children could have had things explained to them like this when I was away on operations”.

ServicePals.com teams up with ARRSE

December 11th, 2008

ARmy Rumour Service

ServicePals.com has associated itself with ARmy Rumour SErvice and Rum Ration the leading forums for serving and ex serving members of the Armed Forces. For a long time ARRSE has been the place for soldiers to air their grievances and a primary point of call for soldiers and officers to find out about how the troops are dealing with major changes affecting them in operational theatres. ServicePals.com are linking themselves closely with ARRSE and Rum Ration and critically helping with publicising its much sought after Recruitment Services in the form of Troops to Task.

ServicePals director Gus Goodall said: “in my 22 years in the Army I found within the last 5 years Senior NCO’s and Warrant Officers as well as some CO’s started using ARRSE as a portal to gain information on soldiers general views on all aspects of soldiering. I used it several times to raise issues I was dealing with as a local commander. Its a valuable resource and with the creation of Olive Jobs it provides a trusted source of recruitment for Ex Forces and a legitimate regulated Ad Service for Ex Forces potential employers. Its nice to know there are still companies like ServicePals and ARRSE who care about and still actively commit to improving communication and support to troops both serving and retired”

ServicePals.com Social Network Site now on DII

December 10th, 2008

Dii

ServicePals has successfully deployed its software so that it is listed as a safe site over the DII (Defence Information Infrastructure). Social Networks by default are not allowed through the firewall of DII due to excessive javascript and bad programming. As Servicepals is not an out of the box solution it has been able to cut down on unnecessary use of ajax and javascript while maintaining a fresh user interface.

Product Director Gus Goodall, himself the former Senior Webmaster for the British Army took DII and its use of the IGS (internet gateway service) into consideration during the build which has lead to ServicePals being one of the only Military Social networks that troops can get whilst deployed on operations or indeed in barracks. ServicePals.com has also streamlined its interface so that it loads pages faster when in operational theatre who don’t always have the luxury of broadband.

The Remount Programme

As ServicePals affirms its ties with the Remount Programme it has recently been recognised for both its affiliation and ServicePals director Gus Goodall’s involvement in the successful advancement of giving the troops what they require post operations and on leaving the services. ServicePals has made provision on its website for The Programmes’ continuation scheme called the 15 minute Club.

General Sir Antony Walker KCB a Former Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff has said:

“I am delighted to endorse ServicePals and its association with Remount and the 15 Minute Club and look forward to both going  from strength to strength. I shall follow their development with great interest.”

Former WO2 Gus Goodall has been involved from the start with Remount and was heavily involved in the publicity and promotion of the programme to both soldiers and civil servants alike whilst serving and continues to promote Remount having left the Army in September.

More information on The Remount Programme can be found here.

General Dannatt Message For Charities

December 9th, 2008
Comments Off
General Dannatt

As the year draws to a close I would like to highlight the splendid efforts of the Service charities over the past 12 months and to thank you all for the remarkable support that you have given them. Service charities have been very much in the public eye this year and this has enabled Help for Heroes (H4H) to raise more than £14 million from public donations.

Much of this money has already been targeted to improve the standard of care that our wounded soldiers receive. But Help for Heroes is not the whole story. The Royal British Legion (RBL) Poppy Appeal is on track to at least match 2007’s all time high of over £30 million; the Sailors Soldiers Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) appeal has delivered Norton House next to Headley Court and will open similar accommodation at Selly Oak early next year; and the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) annual donor appeal is proving to be their most successful ever – they expect to exceed their annual target.

This demonstrates increased levels of public awareness of the huge contribution made by the Armed Forces, their service to the Nation and the sacrifices service personnel have made in the course of their duties. We must never, however, take the support of Service charities for granted, so as 2009 begins, I would ask you all to keep up your efforts and to spread the focus of your fundraising activities across the work of H4H, RBL, SSAFA and the ABF.

Free Transport For Veterans

December 9th, 2008
Comments Off
Free Transport in London

War veterans in London are to receive free travel on the capital’s transport network, whether they are residents or visitors, in recognition of their service to the country.

From 2 November all war veterans in receipt of a pension under the War Pensions Scheme or the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme, including war widows and widowers and eligible dependents, will be able to travel for free on Transport for London bus, Tube, tram, Docklands Light Railway and London Overground services. The Train Operating Companies have also backed the Mayor in agreeing that war veterans will be able to travel free on their services within Greater London. The new scheme will particularly benefit the estimated 2,600 war veterans, war widows and widowers aged under 60 living in London who are not eligible for a freedom pass. On average, they are expected to save around £200 each a year. This will be particularly useful in enabling wounded service personnel to travel to receive medical treatment, as well as making life easier for the significant number of veterans who battle with post-traumatic stress and other mental health problems.

Boris Johnson said: “War Veterans can often have a hard time when they return, sometimes facing issues such as serious injury, mental illness and unemployment. Those that have lost spouses or parents have also suffered for the service they have given. Yet in both cases they are not entitled to existing travel concessions. “I want to change that, and am pleased that, from November, London will be doing its bit in recognising the unflinching contribution that these men and women of the forces have made, by offering free travel throughout the capital for inured veterans.”

Derek Twigg, the Minister for Veterans at the Ministry of Defence, said: “I am delighted that London has made this highly practical concession to our injured veterans and war widows and hope that other authorities may be able to adopt a similar scheme”.

Ross Kemp, BAFTA award-winning documentary maker and star of Ross Kemp in Afghanistan, said: “This is a brilliant idea and I advocate the same for travel for all servicemen and women across the UK as many are based far from their families. US servicemen and women receive discounts in many food chains and cinemas. Why cant we do this here?’”

Russell Thompson, Director of National Events and Fundraising at The Royal British Legion, said: “The Royal British Legion warmly welcomes the Mayor of London’s initiative of free travel for injured veterans and qualifying dependants. Announced on Veterans Day for implementation during the Remembrance period this year, the initiative goes some way to recognising the incredible contribution that members of our Armed Forces have made and continue to make in service of their country; and we would hope that local authorities around the country will consider similar measures.”

TV producer Colin Burgess, a 41-year-old ex-Army Major who served as a reconnaissance pilot in Northern Ireland in 1993, as well as on a peacekeeping tour of Central America in 1988, said : “The news that injured veterans will receive free network travel around the capital is fantastic and will bring us closer to the situation in other countries such as America and Australia where injured and non-injured Veterans are given wide-ranging benefits. “One of the great things about the army is that you are encouraged to believe that nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it. Soldiers expect things to go wrong: for the transport not to be available; for the equipment to break; for the plan to have to change. And managing change is a great ability to have whether you are on army operations or managing a TV production”.
